You have access to the most sought after and valuable commodity in the world. It mobilizes people to action; to achieve; to spend. It is used to value companies launching for IPO; it determines if businesses thrive or fail. Those trying to obtain it leverage the lion's share of their assets to access it. Chances are, you are forfeiting it or giving it away for free....
On a personal level, it's what determines Success, Happiness, and overall Well-being.
It's where we find our Creativity; Inspiration.
It's where we Forge Relationships.
What is it?...
If at this moment, I have your attention... Well, that's exactly what it is: Your Attention. It happens to also be your most valuable asset and commodity. When forfeited, it can stand between you and your goals, dreams, and daily unintentional and subconscious decisions. In hearing this, you may argue that you don't have enough to begin with. You may bare the symptoms of someone professing to be in short supply of meaningful attention:
- Days that blur together, details faded
- Constant activity both at work and home
- "Time goes by so fast" Syndrome
Although these symptoms may argue for a 'shortage' of available attention, I assert to the opposite... That devoting your attention to what matters is the only way to claim it back!
Tune in to what matters, tune out to the rest.
Marketing is the social science of figuring out what makes people remember; at its best, it aims to create a positive memory.
In most cases, it's the largest non-essential expenditure companies make. With the dawn of this digital age, the real estate available to grab our attention, has swelled to meet the demand of the exponential growth of consumer options. Since today there are more business entities than ever, the efforts have gotten louder and louder, contributing to an overall sensory overload. We're busy; running; always doing. Past days run together into a featureless landscape. Notifications, advertising, branding... And when the music stops we 'check out' and decompress with the buffet of media and entertainment to consume.
The cost to our lives, beyond the automated behavior in us that it produces... if far more costly, and quite frankly, it's a bi-product of the war waged against our conscious free will. Don't get me wrong, I love quality products and services. I love to discover new things that make my life just that much more enjoyable... like a milk frother for my made-at-home lattes, on mornings where I'm afforded the time to brew a pot of my favorite 'Joe.
However, as we intentionally and unintentionally consume entertainment and advertising, we give away more than our time in the exchange. We give away our own possibility, our own mental real estate. Framed a different way, moment by moment, when we allow our lives to be narrated by outside sources, we forfeit our own thoughts, inspirations and meaningful interactions with others.
I've realized that the things in my life that I've struggled to accomplish, were mostly due to having a fragmented attention. Life tears us into so many different directions. The key here, is to mindfully taking back our freedom of choice as to where we SPEND our attention. What and Where we spend our attention on has a direct correlation to our successes and failures. What we set out to be, to have, to live is tethered to us by our attention.
It's where we find our Creativity;
It's our source of Inspiration.
Spend your attention; wisely & purposely.
Whether you want to develop your relationships, achieve something you've never finished, or grow parts of yourself you've only ever imagined...
Be Intentionally Mindful.
Look with new eyes, hear with fresh ears. Claim back the real estate of your attention; Set it to what Matters!
Smell the raindrops.
Don't let your Senses and Ambitions be drowned out by the clamor that surrounds you
find your LOVE to GIVE to the world...
find others wanting to do the same...
